Determined to maintain her independence, Mary struggles with a pile of overdue bills following her job loss at the pool hall. Simultaneously, Eric and Annie receive a surprise visit from "The Colonel" (guest-star Peter Graves). Matt refuses to take responsibility for his poor performance in organic chemistry, instead blaming everyone around him. Lucy recruits Simon to help boost her Homecoming Queen campaign, hoping it will also enhance his standing among peers. Meanwhile, Ruthie feels her wishes come true as she gets moved from her adversary's class to a well-regarded private school.
