Episode Overview
In the premiere of season eight, the Camden family is wrapping up their summer at a beach house. Earlier in the season, Simon was involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of Paul Smith, leaving him struggling with guilt. While Eric and Annie encourage Simon to prepare for the upcoming school year, Eric hopes that Paul’s parents (guest stars Katie Mitchell and Mark Moses) will agree to the insurance settlement. Tensions rise when Paul's brother vandalizes the church with graffiti declaring "Thou Shalt Not Kill." Overwhelmed, Simon flees to New York seeking solace. Meanwhile, Lucy and Kevin contemplate starting a family, and Peter spends increasing time with Ruthie, who learns of Mary and Carlos's marriage.
