Bill Hawks gets a message requesting his assistance for a friend from his Civil War days, who is Native American. Upon his arrival, he discovers the townspeople are digging a well on the man's land. As he investigates further, he learns the tragic news that his friend has been hanged for allegedly assaulting a local girl.
