Episode Overview

Michael Portillo begins his journey on the Southwest Chief in Dodge City, Kansas, a legendary frontier town from the Old West, where he explores the infamous Long Branch Saloon, known for its numerous shoot-outs. He enjoys a performance by the Dodge City Cowboy Band at the city depot and shares a meal with a descendant of a railroad land agent who sold vast tracts of land to European settlers in the 19th century. Continuing on to Lamar, Colorado, Michael reflects on a tragic massacre of American Indians who were caught in the path of white expansion across the Great Plains.
