Great American Railroad Journeys (2016)
S04E10 Edmonton to Jasper
Episode Overview
Michael Portillo continues his westward rail adventure across the Canadian Prairie, traveling from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Jasper, Alberta. Following his 1899 Appleton’s guide, he discovers the vibrant, oil-rich city of Edmonton, the second largest in Alberta. Along the North Saskatchewan River, he steps back in time to learn about the life of les voyageurs, who traversed the land by foot and canoe to trade furs with indigenous communities. He marvels at Edmonton’s early 20th-century streetcars, lovingly maintained by the Radial Railway Society, and even takes the opportunity to drive one across a stunning high-level bridge. With Edmonton’s modern light rail system serving 80 million passengers annually, Michael learns about the city's ambitions for future growth. His expansive journey culminates in the breathtaking scenery of the Rocky Mountains.
