Inside Nature's Giants (2009)
S01E04 The Giraffe
Episode Overview
Veterinary scientist Mark Evans leads a group of specialists on a quest to explore the fascinating biology of the giraffe. Creationists ponder how this remarkable animal developed such an elongated neck, while evolutionary biologist Professor Richard Dawkins argues that its unique structure serves as compelling evidence for Darwin’s theory of natural selection. For instance, a single nerve takes a lengthy route from the voice box to the brain, a design flaw if crafted by an "Intelligent Designer." Despite its lengthy neck, it shares the same seven vertebrae as most mammals. The giraffe's heart, relatively small, pumps blood under extreme pressure to support its towering frame, complemented by thick skin that functions like a natural G-suit. As the research team uncovers the giraffe's evolutionary journey, biologist Simon Watt observes their behavior in their natural habitat, from foraging to combat.
