World War II in Colour (2009)
S01E08 The Soviet Steamroller
Episode Overview
By July 1943, the ramifications of Hitler’s disastrous Eastern campaign had become unmistakable. After unsuccessful attempts to secure decisive victories at Stalingrad and Moscow, his forces were now vulnerable to the immense Soviet war apparatus. With vast resources and an almost endless supply of troops, the Red Army steadily drove the Germans out of Russia, advancing through Ukraine, Poland, the Balkans, and Hungary. This conflict was monumental, with millions of soldiers clashing in brutal combat, but it also featured small groups of partisans, such as Tito in Yugoslavia, who led guerrilla warfare against the occupying Nazis.
