Dr. Harold Shipman, believed to be one of history's most notorious murderers, is thought to have taken the lives of 275 individuals, though the true number may never be confirmed. At 57, he received 15 concurrent life sentences for his murders and an additional four years for faking a will, but he took his own life in prison shortly after his sentencing. Shipman consistently denied the allegations against him. When authorities began their investigation in September 1998, they found it perplexing that a trusted GP, revered by over 3,000 patients, could also be a serial killer. The coroner suggested that the only plausible explanation was Shipman's twisted enjoyment of the dying process and the power he wielded over life and death.
