After Margaret's father loses his job as a botanist, he starts behaving strangely and isolates himself in the basement. While everyone else overlooks his odd actions and the unsettling sounds emanating from below, Margaret is deeply frightened. She wonders if her dad has transformed into a mad scientist. Her brother, Casey, dismisses her concerns—until he discovers that their father has been consuming plant food! Confused and alarmed, Margaret and Casey decide to explore the dark, eerie basement to uncover the mystery behind their dad's bizarre behavior.
