Annie Tahan vanished in 1989, leaving behind her infant daughter and boyfriend, Chief Petty Officer Michael Paalan, who claimed she simply walked away. Four years later, with few leads, Charleston, S.C. authorities turned to NCIS for assistance. Retired Special Agent Pete Hughes noted, "Given that Michael Paalan was on active duty, we had a responsibility to uncover the truth." Questions arose about Paalan's involvement in Tahan's disappearance, leading to years of difficult investigation, collaboration between multiple agencies, surveillance, and a sting operation to seek answers. Complicating matters was the fact that they were probing one of their own.
