Episode Overview
An asphalt grinder efficiently breaks down the old driveway, transforming the blacktop into gravel that will form the foundation for the newly designed entrance. Inside, Mark Schaub gives Steve a tour of the newly installed gas fireplace in the guest room. A last-minute Massachusetts code change nixed the open unit we initially wanted, but the new fireplace is an attractive alternative, complete with a remote control, period-style English tiles, and a mantle crafted from salvaged pieces of the old master bathroom fireplace. Meanwhile, landscape architect David Hawk shows Steve the evolving new driveway, which dramatically alters the arrival experience compared to the previous straight 16-foot-wide approach. Richard Trethewey introduces a new energy-recovery ventilator that not only circulates fresh air throughout the highly insulated home but also captures heat and moisture from the outgoing stale air during winter, enhancing the incoming airflow.
