This Old House (1979)
S30E06 Weston; Raising Timbers
Episode Overview
The second week of raising the house kicks off with a traditional hand-raising of the timberframe on the first floor. A crane will handle the rest, hoisting a massive forty-eight-foot assembly made of Douglas Fir and live Oak crucks that will span the entire first level. Timberframe expert Mark Roentsch guides host Kevin O'Connor through the assembly process, demonstrating how the pieces interlock. Meanwhile, homeowner Pete Favat gives Kevin a tour of the new kitchen area, while master carpenter Norm Abram heads to Claremont, New Hampshire, to oversee the creation of custom cabinets finished with hand-applied milk paint and aging techniques to blend seamlessly with the rustic barn aesthetic. Back in Weston, the exterior walls of the first floor, complete with windows and some finishes, are lifted into position by the crane.
