This Old House (1979)

S32E18 Los Angeles; Only in LA

Feb 03, 2011 Season 32 Episode 18 Documentary, Reality

Episode Overview

Master carpenter Norm Abram and host Kevin O'Connor visit a prominent movie studio in LA, where they find homeowner Kurt Albrecht busy in the animation department, a place where creating a feature film can take up to five years. Meanwhile, back in Silver Lake, renovations are progressing swiftly. Kevin observes that while the front of the house remains intact, the back has been completely demolished, lacking walls and a roof. Site supervisor Angel Leon shares updates on the massive foundation form for the new addition, designed to comply with LA’s stringent seismic codes and hillside regulations. Among the challenges are maneuvering five concrete truckloads through narrow roads and managing a quick-setting 3000 psi mix in the scorching sun. In Stockton, Norm explores a facility that uses a "shake table" to simulate earthquakes, helping to devise strategies to safeguard structures and their occupants.
