Africa (2013)
S01E02 Savannah
Episode Overview
The second episode takes viewers through East Africa, showcasing the dramatic landscapes from the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains to the arid plains and caustic soda lakes of the Great Rift Valley. The filmmakers delve into the critical choices animals face in this dynamic environment. On the savannah, agama lizards take risks as they venture close to a dozing lion pride to snatch flying insects. A shoebill chick is seen attacking its sibling, leading the parents to reject it. In Amboseli, a severe drought, the worst in half a century, results in the tragic loss of an elephant calf among many others. Yet, the arrival of the rains brings hope, uniting large herds for socializing. In Eye to Eye, cameraman Mark Deeble reflects on the moral implications of capturing footage of the dying calf.
