Africa (2013)
S01E05 Sahara
Episode Overview
The second-to-last episode begins in the cedar woodlands of the Atlas Mountains, where Barbary macaques find themselves cut off from other primate species due to the encroaching Sahara. Aerial views reveal the Sahara's rocky terrain. Among the wildlife highlighted are Grévy's zebras, addaxes, and naked mole rats, all thriving on the desert's outskirts. Two million barn swallows embark on a perilous migration across the Sahara, gathering at a toxic oasis to feast on flies. The dwindling freshwater pools harbor trapped desert crocodiles, captured while hunting tilapia. Macro shots showcase the challenges faced by dung beetles and silver ants, the latter surviving the punishing midday heat with their reflective exoskeletons. The episode also reveals how an 18-month time-lapse of Libya's sand dunes was captured.
