Episode Overview
Nell gets ready for the visit of Mary-Ellen Baldwin, her pretentious rival from Alabama. Upon arriving in New York, Mary-Ellen informs Mama Maybelle and Nell that she plans to demolish the old church to build new condos. Furious at this foolishness, Mama Maybelle rejects Mary-Ellen's $5,000 offer, but Nell is tempted by the money. Determined to save the church, Mama Maybelle heads to Alabama. While she meets with Mayor Watson, Nell and Joey stay at the church, where Nell shares stories about her father’s preaching. Inspired by these memories, when Mama Maybelle returns with disappointing news, Nell tears up the checks, vowing to fight for her father's church, no matter the outcome. Mama Maybelle beams with pride, finally seeing Nell make the right choice.
