Dangerfield finds himself in a tricky predicament when his aid worker friend, Mary Blanchard, requests his help with an illegal immigrant, a young orphan named Adriana, whose family was tragically killed by a bomb in Bosnia. Agreeing to assist her temporarily, Paul introduces Adriana to Alison and Marty, who insists on charging £4 an hour for babysitting while Dangerfield works. When Joanna meets Adriana, they form an instant connection, becoming nearly inseparable. However, when Adriana gets caught shoplifting and DI Jackson suggests contacting social services, Joanna and Paul decide to claim her as their niece. Later, Mary returns with news that Adriana must go back to Bosnia, but Joanna, eager to keep the girl with them, proposes they foster her longer and even surprises Dangerfield by suggesting they consider adopting her.
