Saïd, now recovered, shuns Mershah for abandoning him during his near-death experience and demands that the other Muslims follow suit. Inspired by Saïd's authority, Groves makes a lethal choice in his name. In a parallel storyline, Beecher, having undergone a significant change due to his time in prison, manages to exact his long-awaited revenge on Schillinger.
