Arthur Lilley (George C. Scott), a newly appointed teacher, arrives in Medicine Bow with his snobbish wife (Anne Meacham), who considers the position beneath his qualifications. Despite his education, Arthur struggles with feelings of inadequacy stemming from a tragic fire that claimed the lives of several students at his previous school in Vermont. When two escaped convicts seize him, his wife, and the schoolchildren—including Betsy Garth—hostage, Arthur faces an ultimate challenge that may finally reveal his true character.
