On March 6, 2003, as Air Algérie Flight 6289 took off from Aguenar – Hadj Bey Akhamok Airport in Tamanrasset, Algeria, the left engine failed. The plane stalled and ultimately crashed into the desert close to the Trans-Sahara Highway. Tragically, of the 103 people on board, only one survived the accident.
