When Reed's wife Jean is denied credit while trying to buy a washer, Reed decides to investigate the situation at the credit bureau. It turns out there was a mix-up with another James Reed who has a different middle initial, which they promptly clear up. Meanwhile, a hit-and-run incident unfolds as the victim provides a detailed description and license plate of the car involved. Although the vehicle is located with visible damage, its owner adamantly claims innocence. Further digging reveals the actual culprits: two boys who had stolen camping gear and were caught while hitchhiking. In a twist, police mistakenly apprehend a liquor store owner who was in pursuit of the robbery suspect.
