With Piper and Leo absent, Prue and Phoebe find themselves battling a group of demons called Guardians, who shield human killers in return for innocent souls. After rescuing Darryl from one of these Guardians, the sisters are called to testify in court, only to uncover a sinister plot lurking beneath the surface. At the same time, Phoebe develops feelings for the new district attorney, Cole Turner, complicating matters further.
