Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993)

S02E10 Heat

Oct 01, 1994 Season 2 Episode 10 Comedy, Documentary, Kids

Episode Overview

Nye Labs is buzzing with excitement as everything from snow cones to flowers and hot dogs comes to life, showcasing the dynamic world of molecules. Regardless of their state—solid, liquid, or gas—molecules are constantly in motion, with their speed influenced by temperature. Cold objects feature sluggish molecules, while hotter items boast rapid movement. Essentially, temperature reflects how fast these molecules are moving. To warm up a cold object, its molecules must gain speed. Heat travels in three distinct manners: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction occurs when heat transfers between touching solids, like when your warm fingers meet a chilled soda can. Convection involves heat moving through liquids or gases, which is why a hot bath envelops you in warmth, not just where you sit.
