Episode Overview
While perusing the newspaper, Rose and Pearl pick six numbers inspired by an article. Meanwhile, Mary dismisses the lottery as a frivolous use of time and money. However, the allure of a massive jackpot doesn't sway them. Mary lectures the girls about the futility of playing, but they listen politely. Lester surprises Mary with a scratch-off ticket, and she ends up winning $10. While waiting to cash it in, she grabs a lottery play slip and selects numbers from the same article. Sandra notices her and realizes Mary is in for a surprise. When Rose and Pearl visit Mary's apartment, they confront her about hypocrisy—after denouncing the lottery, she bought her own ticket. In a gesture of goodwill, she offers to share any winnings. As luck would have it, the Pick 6 ticket turns out to be a winner! Not only does Mary hit the jackpot, but several residents of the 227 apartment building and much of Washington DC do too. The grand prize amounts to
