S04E05 Brother from a Sister City
Episode Overview
Brenda, an accomplished track athlete, is visited by her coach at the Jenkins' home for some coffee, and he brings along his friend, Willie Amakye from Ghana. Willie is in need of funds to continue his training in the U.S. for the Olympics, prompting Mary to propose a neighborhood marathon. To add excitement, Willie invites his friend, the legendary Florence Griffith Joyner, to join. Mary reaches out to potential sponsors, but after Brenda experiences a disappointing loss in a track event, her confidence plummets, leading her to withdraw from the race. Flo Jo encourages her not to let one defeat dictate her spirit. As snow forces other participants to drop out, Willie perseveres, determined to raise the necessary funds. Inspired by his dedication, Brenda ultimately decides to join him in the race.
