S01E06 Swing: The Velocity of Celebration - 1937-1939
Episode Overview
Swing music would reconnect with its blues origins in Kansas City, as Count Basie and the Barons of Rhythm introduced their lively sound to New York City. Basie would also provide Billie Holiday with her initial opportunity, inviting her to tour, perform, and enjoy the nightlife alongside the band. Meanwhile, a young Ella Fitzgerald would emerge from Chick Webb’s ensemble at the Savoy Ballroom, earning the title of top female vocalist by Down Beat in 1937, surpassing even Billie Holiday.
