Title: Shanklin Plot: A group of former Confederate soldiers confronts Ben, demanding a hefty ransom of $25,000. When Hoss stands up to them, their leader, Shanklin, fatally wounds him in the stomach. As Hoss fights for his life, the family’s doctor struggles to perform the necessary surgery. Distraught, Ben begs Shanklin—who also happens to be a skilled physician—to help save his son. Meanwhile, Jamie, who narrowly escaped injury during the chaos, frantically searches for Joe, who is preoccupied with a glamorous actress and engrossed in a high-stakes poker game.
