Neta, a teenage girl and friend of Jamie, witnesses a violent robbery that leaves Mr. Trumbull—who is set to inherit a vast fortune—dead. The assailant, a drifter named Griff Bannon, spots Neta before escaping and devises a plan to take on Mr. Trumbull's identity while keeping a close eye on her. Neta’s father, adhering to strict "traditional values," discourages her from associating with the Cartwright family, leaving her feeling isolated. As the impostor infiltrates the Cartwrights' circle, he meticulously tracks Neta, determined to ensure her silence. Neta must find the bravery to confide in Jamie and the others about what she saw and expose the criminal.
