Hoss forms a bond with a humble recluse named Patch, who bakes the most delicious apple pie Hoss has ever had. So taken by Patch's talent, Hoss invites him to join the workforce at the Ponderosa. However, Ben is skeptical of Hoss' new acquaintance. When the Cartwrights find themselves in a shootout with a mining group, Patch freezes in fear. He carries a profound terror of violence rooted in a traumatic event from his youth, yet he realizes that to thrive in the West, he must confront and conquer his fear.
