Months later, McKay is informed that he will never fly again, leaving him bitter and desperate for a civilian flying job. However, he faces rejection due to the stigma surrounding Vietnam veterans. Finally landing a position in air traffic monitoring, he loses it—not from a flashback but from sheer frustration. Meanwhile, Ruiz returns to New York but struggles to find work. In Montana, Percell, now a carpenter, is unsettled when he discovers a Vietnamese worker on his team. That evening, he awkwardly encounters a peace activist on a blind date. Back in North Carolina, Bill Griner, now blinded, finds solace in the fields with his loyal dog while his parents turn to faith healing. In Vietnam, Taylor meets a new black soldier who reveals he returned because the world outside is unwelcoming. Doc, assigned to a field hospital, faces trouble for showing kindness to a dying patient.
