Our World (2007)
S16E15 Hong Kong: Life Under the Crackdown
Episode Overview
Over the past year, Our World has closely followed journalists and activists navigating the tumultuous landscape of Hong Kong's recent history. When sovereignty was handed back to China by the British government 25 years ago, there was a commitment to uphold freedom of speech. However, recent legislation has largely stifled dissent. Public protests have nearly vanished, pro-democracy legislators have been replaced by supporters of Beijing, and the new Chief Executive is the former Security Chief who oversaw the crackdown. Reporter Danny Vincent has documented the experiences of those who were part of the protest movement, including many activists and reporters who now find themselves imprisoned.
