Comedian Lee Mack, originally named Lee McKillop, hails from northern England, just like his great-grandfather, the comedian Billy Mac. While Lee possesses a few playbills from Billy's variety performances, he knows little about his legacy. As he delves into his family history, Lee learns that Billy was not just a comedian; he was also a soldier who joined Liverpool's first pals battalion at the onset of World War I, refining his act amidst the chaos of the Battle of the Somme. Additionally, Lee is intrigued by the story of his maternal grandfather, Joe, who was abandoned by his unmarried mother and raised by his grandparents in County Mayo during the Irish Civil War.
