The Keatons are taken aback to discover that racism still exists when their Black friends move in across the street. While dining with Steven's coworker Gus Thompson and his wife Maya, the conversation reveals that the couple is struggling to find a home. When Elyse mentions that a house across the street is available, Gus and Maya delicately bring up the topic of race. Steven acknowledges the absence of Black families in their neighborhood but insists that race shouldn't be a concern.
