Alex's bond with Lauren faces a challenge when he develops a crush on a spirited music student. While Lauren is away for a psychology conference, Alex starts a freshman economics seminar at Leland College. During his inaugural lecture, he is disrupted by a tardy student, Marty Brodie, a free-spirited and somewhat disorganized music major.
