D.C. Carver, newly promoted to CID, is feeling queasy as he and D.S. Roach investigate a case aboard the police launch. The River Police recover the body of a murdered informant from the Thames, but Roach is infuriated when two detectives from Scotland Yard take over the investigation. Meanwhile, P.C. Taffy Edwards and Stamp respond to a call about an unconscious elderly man accompanied by a fiercely protective dog. A woman offers assistance, but Stamp brusquely tells her to leave, only to be shocked later when she appears at Sun Hill as the new uniformed Inspector, Christine Frazer. P.C. Hollis is conducting a pool to guess who will succeed D.I. Galloway, with rumors suggesting D.I. Burnside. At the hospital, a solid gold krugerand is discovered on the old man, leading W.P.C.
