After Paul leaves Chimchar behind, Ash steps in to give it a fresh start by inviting it to join his team. Chimchar gladly accepts Ash's offer. In the tournament semifinals, Ash competes alongside Paul against Brock and Holly. They successfully advance to the finals, where they face off against Dawn and Conway.
