In this episode, the family finds themselves transported back to the tech-savvy 80s, complete with a kitchen brimming with gadgets, including a microwave that’s about the size of a small car. Presenter Giles Coren and food historian Polly Russell utilize a remarkable national food survey, filled with food diaries, to shape the family's meals and introduce them to the decade's popular culinary delights. Thanks to technology, they can microwave a whole roast dinner, create fizzy drinks, and whip up the latest trend: a cheese and ham toastie. Meanwhile, outside their home, they encounter new innovations like pre-packaged sandwiches, the emergence of nouvelle cuisine and fast-food chains, along with a variety of global flavors now available at their local supermarket.
