Episode Overview
Benjamin Burns was born in 1997, appearing to be a perfectly healthy baby. However, just six months later, while playing with her brother, his sister accidentally fractured his arm when she tried to catch him as he fell. In the ensuing weeks, Benjamin’s parents took him to the hospital multiple times, only to discover that not only had his arm been re-injured, but he also had a fractured skull. This led to Child Protective Services intervening, and Benjamin was separated from his parents for three months amid allegations of abuse. Loving parents Gerald and Ellen fought tirelessly to reunite with their son. Eventually, it was determined that Benjamin had Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), a genetic condition that causes fragile bones, clearing the Burns of any wrongdoing and allowing them to bring their son home.
