Three months later, Annie is struggling to cope with Harry's death. Meanwhile, Nancy and Lawrence have fully succumbed to their affair. Esther is taking precautions by vetting Nancy's correspondence with Sergeant Tucker, worried she might be collaborating with the Nazis. Joyce, a devoted patriot, faces a tough choice: should she protect her husband, who has deserted, or report him? Complicating matters, Farmer Finch's longtime rival, Ernest Luckhurst, a food ration officer, shows up at the farm, determined to expose him.
