Talakad boasts a rich history that dates back to at least the 8th or 9th century, when it served as the capital for the Ganga Kings. Over time, it flourished as a significant city under the Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar rulers, and the Mysore Wodeyars, with each dynasty leaving its unique architectural mark. Beneath the sands lie 30 temples, and a local legend explains that the town was buried in sand due to a curse placed upon it by a queen named Rani Almellamma.
