When Gordon first visited the Fenwick Arms in 2006, he encountered landlord Brian, who, despite having a quadruple heart-bypass and three decades in the pub industry, was adamant about running the kitchen his own way. Unfortunately, Brian and his partner Elaine were working grueling 120-hour weeks while the pub spiraled into debt, with losses of £1,500 weekly and bankruptcy looming just months away. Brian's financial mismanagement included splurging on unnecessary kitchen gadgets and a vast array of novelty plates. He favored an overly ambitious menu filled with rich sauces, restricting his head chef to mere garnishing. Gordon intervened, shifting Brian out of the kitchen to refocus on the essence of a classic British pub. They launched a Campaign for Real Gravy, reinstituting traditional dishes, and things began to improve. Fast forward a year, and Gordon returns to discover a demoralized staff and a defeated Brian.
