Fanny has captured the affection of Edmund Sparkler, but his mother, Mrs. Merdle, is hell-bent on tearing them apart for good. At the same time, Merdle's Bank faces an onslaught of anxious investors. Arthur grows increasingly uneasy when he spots a dubious French man, the nefarious Rigaud, lurking around his mother’s home.
