Hardie arrives at an Army fort carrying a payroll just as it's under siege by Native Americans. The only officer remaining is an inexperienced Lieutenant who lacks confidence, causing his men to question his leadership. Seeing potential in the young officer, Jim thinks that assisting him could reveal his true capabilities.
