World's Greatest Palaces (2019)
S01E05 Neuschwanstein Castle
Episode Overview
Nestled in the snow-covered Bavarian mountains of Southern Germany stands a breathtaking fairytale castle, Neuschwanstein, commissioned by the eccentric King Ludwig II. This enchanting structure is not only an architectural wonder but also served as inspiration for Walt Disney. Perched in the Alps, the 19th-century castle draws influence from the operas of German composer Richard Wagner. While designed to evoke a medieval aesthetic, it boasts modern innovations of its time. With its grand throne room and an artificial cave, the castle took 17 years to build but remained unfinished after Ludwig was deposed, imprisoned, and met a mysterious end in 1868.
