Episode Overview

Dr. Baker places an ad seeking another physician to help lighten his workload and to escape Mrs. Oleson's incessant complaints. He hires Dr. Caleb Ledoux, not anticipating the backlash due to his race. The Ingalls stand out as one of the few families willing to accept him, while others express blatant racism. Even Dr. Baker battles his own biases, assigning Dr. Ledoux only trivial cases to undermine him. When a pregnant woman faces serious complications, Dr. Ledoux is the only physician available, but her husband refuses to let him inside due to his race. Charles intervenes, allowing Ledoux to successfully perform the surgery, delivering a healthy son. Dr. Baker, watching in disbelief, realizes that only Ledoux's exceptional skills saved the woman. Later, Ledoux confides in his wife about his desire to leave Walnut Grove, but it's Dr. Baker's heartfelt speech at church that ultimately persuades him to remain.
