Brandon and Brenda are at odds when their parents announce they can only afford to send one of them to an out-of-state college. To avoid choosing favorites, Jim and Cindy opt for a second mortgage, but both siblings ultimately decide to apply to a local university in California. Brenda worries that her relationship with Dylan is slipping, while he and Kelly grow closer over their shared uncertainty about college.
