At Valerie's surprise birthday bash, Abby reveals her engagement to Bill, prompting Val and Kelly to team up in an attempt to persuade their parents to reconsider the wedding. However, they soon see how genuinely happy Bill and Abby are and choose to support their relationship instead. Meanwhile, Bill shocks Kelly by calling off the wedding, leaving her to break the news to a devastated Abby. Valerie opens up to David about her painful past, sharing her experience of abuse by her father. Brandon is offered a job at a prominent newspaper but struggles with the fact that he’d only be filling in for striking reporters. He returns to the Beat and proposes a health plan for Janet, who is overworked and underpaid. Steve is reluctant to introduce Jill to Ted, but Jill realizes her feelings for Steve and returns to him. After Donna's dresses don’t sell, Noah tries to lift her spirits by buying them all, but she’s furious when she learns the truth.
