Now more powerful than ever, Kai keeps Elena imprisoned while he works on mastering his new magical abilities. Back at the Salvatore mansion, Liv and Alaric attempt to prepare Jo for her upcoming merge ceremony with Kai, but they soon realize she isn’t as strong as they had hoped. After bringing Sheriff Forbes home from the hospital, Caroline joins Stefan on a trip to North Carolina to find a treatment for her mother’s cancer. However, Stefan has his own secret agenda for the trip, and he is taken aback when Enzo appears, demanding to know what he’s concealing. Meanwhile, Damon learns of Elena’s abduction by Kai, prompting him to reconsider his plans when an unexpected visitor complicates matters.
