How Britain Worked (2012)
S01E06 Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Episode Overview
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens might not be the first place you'd think of when it comes to the Industrial Revolution, but Guy Martin uncovers a fascinating realm of advanced Victorian technology, impressive architecture, and adventurous plant collectors who ventured to the farthest reaches of the Empire. Meanwhile, local leaders worried about the so-called "degenerate" urban poor. As Guy works on restoring the gardens, he takes on the challenge of mastering the risky art of glassblowing for the massive greenhouses. He also attempts to recreate the original lawnmower, a remarkable British invention. Additionally, Guy employs a little-known technique from the 1800s to create rock for the garden's revamped rockery, and if everything goes well, he'll be tasked with activating the newly installed fountain during the grand opening celebration.
