Katie's mother, Kathryn (Wendie Malick), arrives for Thanksgiving, eager to steal the spotlight as usual. Before her arrival, Katie had a conversation with Anna-Kat's teacher, who expressed concern that Anna-Kat seems more anxious than usual. This revelation leads Katie to recognize that her own anxiety about her mother is impacting her daughter. To make matters worse, an uninvited guest, Viv, unexpectedly joins the Otto family's Thanksgiving celebration.
